TMJ/TMD
Could It Be TMD? “Dr. B” Can Help!
Dr. Batorfalvy has pursued advanced training to treat this common problem of the temporomandibular joint. TMD (or TMJ) is a misaligned jaw joint. TMD can cause an array of troublesome symptoms, such as:
- A jaw that locks or can’t open all the way
- Popping or clicking sounds in the jaw
- Tingling or numb fingers
- Facial pain
- Neck and shoulder pain and stiffness
- Stuffy nose
Dr. B applies both neuromuscular and centric relation philosophies to diagnose and treat TMD in her patients. She will take a series of measurements to determine the extent of the misalignment of your jaw. Neuromuscular dentistry helps determine the natural resting position of your jaw then uses orthodontics or dental restorations to help maintain this position.
The centric relation approach refers to the positioning of the actual parts of the jaw joint. When they don’t fit together properly, this can be a cause of TMD. It is treated with splint therapy, where a plastic appliance is fit to your upper or lower jaw to help gently realign it.
